Employment Opportunities In Marketing

Added: 02/03/2006

Employment opportunities listed under the broad umbrella term “marketing” may actually fall in one of three fields, marketing, public relations or advertising. Each specific area calls for a unique skill set but each also offers the potential for a long and lucrative career, especially in a country as advertising and media saturated as the United States.

The term “marketing” serves as a broad umbrella to describe the field of product and personal promotion that actually encompasses marketing, public relations, and advertising. There are numerous employment opportunities in these areas, especially in the advertisement-saturated culture of the United States.

In public relations work normally focuses on image management, whether that be supervising the introduction of a new product on the market or rehabilitating the image of an existing product due to some scandal or quality issue. When working with public figures, public relations may involve presenting the stance of a political candidate in the most favorable light or helping a celebrity overcome the fallout from a personal incident that has damaged his or her standing with fans. Employment opportunities in public relations are based on the ability of the individual to “spin” a situation.

Pure advertising involves boosting the sales of a given product or product line. Normally employment opportunities in advertising are for copy writers and graphic artists as well as account managers. Most advertising, be it print-based or televised, centers on key catch-phrases, recognizable logos, and attractive graphic presentation.

Account managers are normally individuals who are good at keeping an overall advertising campaign concept intact and managing the activities of the needed writers and artists to produce materials for that campaign. Account managers are also skilled at ad placement and at negotiating the most favorable rates for print or televised spots. They are, in short, the deal makers of the advertising world.

Employment opportunities in marketing may appeal to individuals with a love of research. Marketing involves researching the appropriate target audience for a product or service and helping the manufacturer or individual tailor their product or service accordingly. In essence marketing is the marriage of production and consumption, insuring that the products and services that are made available actually meet the tastes and desires of the consumers.

It is not surprising that the need for legal advice also creates major employment opportunities in the interconnected worlds of public relations, advertising, and marketing. When considering their future employment, law students would do well to consider specializing in copyright and media law, contract law, or personal representation since such issues are raised repeatedly in these professions where contracts, agreements, and egos are staples of life.

In looking at the broad field of marketing and its associated activities advertising and public relations there are many opportunities for employment – law included – that make these fields attractive to students seeking majors and thinking in terms of crafting their careers. The advertising saturation of America shows no sign of slacking off so that these fields should be thriving endeavors for years to come.
