Having Fun With Family Websites

Added: 02/09/2006

Family websites are a good way to get the whole family involved on a website together. You can all have something special to put into the website to keep it fresh with new news or whatever you are into. Also having a family website means that it is open to everyone who wishes to view it. There are no age restrictions on these websites. Meaning that another family can fully enjoy your website to it’s fullest.

Large families around the world are moving towards new ways of keeping in contact with one another.  A very popular method is building and using family websites.

Family websites are those designed by large families as a means of communicating and sharing.  There are a variety of reasons why large families choose to build a website.  The first being large families that live great distances apart all over the country or world use family websites to keep in contact with one another and keep everyone abreast of happenings within the family.

Because you are pretty much unlimited as to what you can post on a website, many large families are turning to family websites and the use of blogs to further communicate with each other.  Pictures are also popular on family websites.  With all the new choices in photography, digital being the best, large families are not able to share photos with one another across great distances without having to wait for the somewhat slow mail service that has a bad habit of losing packages.

Another reason large families are turning to family websites is for the purpose of family research.  Anyone involved in researching family history knows how invaluable the large amount of family websites can be.

Family websites for family history research offer information to other members also doing research in an effort to further the lines of the family.  It can be amazing how many people can connect using family websites.  There are stories circulating about people who have met siblings they did not know to exist when using family websites.

Stories, photographs, and completed family histories are all posted on family websites for the purpose of family research.  Tracing one's roots can be fulfilling and exciting.  There is no telling how far you can go with the research.  Thanks to the advent of family websites, you can share all the information with other researchers to help them get further with their family lines.

If you are considering the opening of a family website, you have a good many options available to you.  First and foremost, you should decide whether the site will be public or private.  Sites to keep in contact with immediate family across great distances are best left private. To maintain the privacy, do not submit the site to any search engines.  This will effectively keep most people away as they will have trouble finding it without the help of a search engine. Sometimes this is not enough, so you may want to consider making the site password protected.  This will help to maintain a high level of privacy among family members.

For those who want a public site should consider submitting to search engines and a lot of them.  This will bring people to your site.  You can also advertise your site through similar web pages.  If you are a member of sites like the one you are building, then you should contact the webmaster and ask about a link exchange.  This will be an invaluable tool to bring members to your site. Who knows where your site could be in 10 years time. Just so long as you keep it up to date, of course.
