When working with web design firms, site owners should remember they are contracting for the work of a professional or professionals and treat them accordingly. Much has been made of the image of web designers and tech gurus who live in dark rooms playing computer games and living on caffeine and junk food. Consequently, web site owners are notorious for treating web designers poorly. Essentially site owners need web design firms and web designers but they don’t always respect them.
In part this situation has been worsened by the availability of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) web design software packages like FrontPage from Microsoft. While functioning and attractive web sites can be constructed with such software, they tend to inject proprietary code into the site’s source code that can cause error’s in non-Microsoft browsers. Opening FrontPage and using its templates to build your site does not make you a web designer nor does it give you a freehand to tell your web design company and its professionals how to do their job.
As a customer working with a web design company it is your job to provide content, express your likes and dislikes in terms of colors, fonts, and design, to proofread the site in development, and to provide feedback that helps the designers fine tune a mutually agreed upon concept. It is not your job to question how the designer is building the site unless a particular piece of code or application is vital to the online function that is your goal. Above all, communicate respect to the professional you have hired. In almost all cases you will be repaid with equal respect and the designer’s best efforts.
Web design firms may be large or small operations depending on your budget and your goals, but the web designers are people and should be treated with the same courtesy with which you wish to be treated. It is true that many eccentric people are drawn to the tech industry, but the site owner would do well to remember that creativity, technological prowess, and eccentricity often go hand in hand.
Most web design firms are also willing to work within your budget if you clearly articulate your needs and limits to them. Few bids are cast in stone and often an initial bid is subject for renegotiation. Don’t assume that the first figure given to you for your consideration is the only option. Web design firms, like any other business entity, do have a tendency to start out with a high bid but will come down into the customer’s range with appropriate negotiation.
Although most web design firms prefer to start from scratch on a site, it is possible to find freelance designers who are willing to take your “do it yourself” site and clean it up. This type of low cost rebuild is usually the purview of high school or college age designers just getting started in the business. A call to the computer teacher of your local high school or the computer science department of the local university will most likely get you a few names and numbers.
If you start out your project with the idea that computer people are second class citizens you will most likely get a second class job. You are a professional seeking the services of a professional. A professional attitude on your part will go a long way toward making the resulting collaboration successful and profitable for all parties involved.
